The ACCP Committee on Smoking and Health has ouflined other measures which this College must undertake if we are to meet our responsibilities. In particular, the committee urges that we combat the increase of smoking among teenagers. Our efforts to reverse this trend can be most effective if there is participation of behavioral scientists, psychologists, youth leaders and other members of the health team. However, ultimately responsibility begins with oneself. Every chest physician or surgeon must first demonstrate in his own professional life that degree of commitment which others may emulate. The unanimous endorsement by the Board of Regents and the Board of Governors of the recommendations of the Committee on Smoking and Health indicates the gravity with which this problem is viewed by our leadership. The new ACCP pledge marks another addition to the distinguished record which ACCP has achieved in recent decades in smoking and health.
